The gap between rich and poor in America is widening at a terrifying pace. I was listening to NPR this morning and they had a report on Infant Mortality rates in Mississippi. THEY ARE INCREASING!!!! It is the 21st century in the wealthiest country in the world and infant deaths (under a year old) are on the rise and it is a direct correlation to how much prenatal care a pregnant woman receives and if she can afford it. Something has to change. Insurance companies are reporting record profits while middle class Americans are struggling to afford their monthly payments. Small businesses are unable to pay for insurance for their employees and their businesses are failing, good luck with that whole American Dream thing. I going to contact my Congressmen and Senators and demand change. It’s a start.

Well, it has offically happened, its the first day of Summer here in Atlanta. Unoffically it been Summer here since April but who's counting. With Summer comes, porch life. Yeah!! When I moved down here three years ago I dreamed of living somewhere that had community, you know a neighborhood where neighbors dropped by and stayed a spell. In DC it just didn't happen, sure you could make plans to stop by a friends house assuming you had made prior arrangements, checked your respected schedules and confirmed the night before and two hours before said time, text confirmations preferred. Well my little neighborhood is all I wanted and more. This Summer I am all about setting goals for myself, thanks http://www.43things.com/. Here my "porch goals" for the Summer:

1. Make the perfect Mint Julep- here's the plan, pick three recipes all from the Food Network website, try said recipes and report back on the findings. EASY!!

2. Create a beodiun lounge area on the back porch- I am constantly trying to improve my porch time evirons- the plan is to build a covered area on the deck with lots of pillows, low table and lots of funky decorations. The inspiration comes from a recent time to Dahab, Egypt. All the tables in the restaurants are low and surrounded by pillows. You kick off your shoes and just lay back and watch the moon rise.

Well more to come... I'll post photos, recipes and progress reports.
